Distinct pathophysiological mechanisms of Heterometrus laoticus and Lychas mucronatus scorpion venoms on cardiovascular and renal functions

Distinct pathophysiological mechanisms of Heterometrus laoticus and Lychas mucronatus scorpion venoms on cardiovascular and renal functions Abstract Background:    Heterometrus laoticus and Lychas mucronatus are widely distributed in Southeast Asia, yet their pathophysiological effects of both venoms remain poorly characterized due to low human fatality rates. This study compared their venom compositions and acute cardiovascular and renal effects. Methods:   Anesthetized male New Zealand White rabbits were monitored for blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and renal clearance following intravenous administration of crude venom (0.5 mg/kg). Venom components were identified via LC-MS/MS, and hematological/biochemical parameters were assessed. Results:    H. laoticus venom induced a rapid, transient hypotension ( p < 0.05), followed by a mild, prolonged hypotensive phase (up to 120 min). Conversely, L. mucronatus venom elicited a biphasic response: ...

Arácnido Taxonomy is an independent scientific initiative founded and maintained exclusively by its creator, established with the purpose of serving not only the global arachnological community, but also the broader scientific and medical communities that rely on accurate taxonomic knowledge, venom research, and biological systematics. The website and all associated materials operate on a non-profit basis and remain freely accessible, with the central objective of advancing research, strengthening taxonomic rigor, and facilitating the open exchange of scholarly knowledge across disciplines.

While numerous colleagues and collaborators contribute their expertise and valuable time, full responsibility for the conceptual development, technical maintenance, editorial oversight, and long-term sustainability of the platform rests with a single individual. The continued operation of Arácnido Taxonomy depends on stable technical infrastructure, secure hosting services, and consistent technical support, all of which require ongoing financial and logistical investment.

Gratitude is extended to the academic institutions, private organizations, professional societies, and individual supporters whose contributions are formally recognized in the Sponsors section. Personal donations are equally significant, as they directly enable the platform to remain operational, expand its scientific scope, and continue providing reliable and accessible resources to researchers, clinicians, educators, and citizen scientists worldwide.

Those who wish to support the continued growth and accessibility of Arácnido Taxonomy may do so through the “Donate by PayPal” option available below or on the website’s main page. Such support plays a meaningful role in sustaining a resource dedicated to arachnology, taxonomy, toxinology, and their important intersections with the wider scientific and medical landscape.
